CHADRON — Chadron State College senior Emily Marin has been named The Project Strive/TRIO Student of the Month for October 2026. A native of Chappell, Nebraska, Marin studies Advanced English with a creative writing minor. She also serves as treasurer and secretary of Sigma Tau Delta, an English honor society, and editor of Tenth Street Miscellany.

Marin said CSC’s welcoming community helped her feel at home when she arrived. She appreciates that the college is small enough to feel familiar while offering plenty of opportunities to grow.

“The community drew me in and has not failed me once,” she said.

Marin has been involved with Project Strive/TRIO since fall 2023. She credits Associate Professor Marcus Jones, as well as a co-taught class with Jones and Dr. Kimberly Cox, with helping her develop her writing voice and style. In that class, she also learned how to improve her work.

TRIO Director Jen Schaer, said Marin’s positive attitude and willingness to help others stand out.

“Her upbeat attitude and her willingness to help others out have been refreshing. Emily has gone above and beyond in the classroom and has shared her writings with others both in Chadron and across the country,” Schaer said.

After graduation, Marin plans to move to Rapid City, South Dakota. She hopes to work at a library while pursuing publication of her first book.

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRIO program, located on the lower level of King Library, provides academic enrichment and supports students’ career exploration, cultural and social enrichment, and self-awareness. Students may qualify if they are first-generation college students (neither parent has a four-year degree), meet low-income criteria established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or have a documented disability.
