Herbarium Home

Founded in the early 1960s, the High Plains Herbarium is the second largest herbarium in Nebraska and the primary repository of plants from the Nebraska panhandle with a significant representation of the plants of southeastern Wyoming, southwestern South Dakota, as well as all of Nebraska and Kansas. More information on our holdings is available at the Index Herbariorum website (http://sweetgum.nybg.org/science/ih/)

We currently have the largest digital footprint of any herbarium in the state with over 2/3 of our vascular plant data accessible via the Consortium of Northern Great Plains Herbaria portal (https://ngpherbaria.org/portal/index.php), and all our accessioned bryophyte data searchable at Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria portal (https://bryophyteportal.org/portal/index.php).

The herbarium has moved to a temporary location in Rooms 147 and 146 in the Burkhiser Complex of the Chadron State College campus while the Math and Science building undergoes renovation.

The vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen herbaria are accessible in Room 147 of Burkhiser, whereas the bulk of our library, the Morgan and Barr collections, the pharmacognosy materials and our art collections are in storage or on display elsewhere on campus, as are most of our exhibits. Arrangements can be made to access the Barr and Morgan collections. We hope to have the remaining collections accessible in our new space in the Math and Science building in the Fall of 2022.

The herbarium can be accessed by appointment by email (srolfsmeier@csc.edu) or by phone (308 432-6385). Our normal working hours are 7:30-4:30 weekdays with exceptions for teaching, lunch and school holidays.
