Two different rock types with an amazing diversity of color and appearances

Jade is a name given to two different silicate minerals: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium amphibole) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum pyroxene). Nephrite is often green, but can be yellow, white or black. Jadeite can be white through shades of green, lavender, yellow, orange, brown or black. Jade is used to make jewelry and other ornaments in many Asian and Latin American cultures. Its importance as a ceremonial and decorative material comes from its unusual colors and its rarity.

The specimen in this exhibit was collected in Wyoming and is from the collection of the late Dr. Kenneth Ohme of Mitchell, Nebraska.
