Homecoming week in full swing

Homecoming week activities began Wednesday and will continue through Saturday. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Jazz it Up on Bourbon Street at Chadron State.”

More information about many of the homecoming activities may be found below.

Football team hosts Colorado School of Mines for homecoming

The football team (7-1 overall and 6-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) will host Colorado School of Mines (6-2, 5-1 RMAC) on Saturday during Homecoming weekend. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.

The Eagles, who have won 24 consecutive conference games, can take a step closer to their third RMAC title in three years with a victory. The Eagles beat the Orediggers 35-7 a season ago.

Wind symphony, community band combining for concert

The fall's first performance by a Chadron State College music group will be Friday when the Wind Symphony and Chadron Community Symphonic Band combine for a concert in Memorial Hall. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public free of charge. The two bands are expecting a big crowd for the concert, not only because audiences of each group will be there, but also because finalists of the homecoming royalty competition will be announced prior to its conclusion. The 51 candidates vying for king or queen, and their guests, have been directed to attend.

Royalty finalists to be announced Friday, winners on Saturday

Fifty-one candidates are vying to become homecoming royalty this week. As a change from previous years, the royalty finalists will be announced during the combined concert of the Wind Symphony and Chadron Community Symphonic Band, which begins 7:30 p.m. Friday in Memorial Hall. The king, queen and runners-up will then be announced at halftime of the Eagles’ football game on Saturday.

Alumni awards to be presented Saturday

Five members of the alumni who have excelled in their professions and eight former outstanding athletes for the Eagles will be given special recognition during homecoming festivities this weekend. The awards will be presented during a luncheon in the Student Center prior to the Eagles' football game Saturday.

The three graduates who will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award are Loren Jacobsen, a semi-retired medical doctor from Broken Bow, Jerry Messman, founder and director of an analytical metrology company in Fort Collins, Colo., and Ann Smith of Chadron, a retired CSC professor, coach and distinguished volunteer of the American Red Cross.

The two recipients of this year's Distinguished Young Alumni Award are lawyer Monica (Thomas) Colbath of Rapid City, S.D., and high school science teacher Sharla (Tollman) Dowding of Newcastle, Wyo.

Three of the graduates being inducted to the Athletic Hall of Fame, Russ Anderson, David McCartney and Steward Perez, played football. The others are basketball stars Tricia Lukawski and the late Felix Sanford, track and field All-Americans Cory Shinkle and Caryn Martin Ziettlow and volleyball standout Wendy Grint Alexander.

Award recipients to speak

Three of the alumni award recipients plan to speak to students and the community Friday. Colbath will speak in the Student Center at 9 a.m. in the as part of the Justice Studies Speaker Series. Messman’s presentation will be at 11 a.m. in room 08 of the Math and Science Building and Jacobsen’s visit will be at 1 p.m. in Math and Science 104.

Graves speaker to tell about Nebraska’s Army posts

The next speaker in the Dorset Graves Lecture Series will deliver a presentation titled "Army Posts in Nebraska." Tom Buecker, curator of the Fort Robinson State Park Museum, will speak Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. in room 108 of the Reta King Library. The lecture is open to the public free of charge and refreshments will be served.

Volleyball team is on the road for three matches

The volleyball team (3-20 overall, 1-12 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) will be on the road for the final time this season by making three stops in Colorado.

The Eagles will play at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Friday and at Colorado Christian on Saturday. The Eagles will also play at Colorado School of Mines on Tuesday before hosting their final three matches of the season at home. Each match starts at 7 p.m.
