Health Care

Two special words when you live in the sparsely populated regions of rural Nebraska. If you are a student that resides in rural Nebraska and your career interest is in health care, you can help meet the needs of rural Nebraska through the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP).

RHOP is a cooperative program between Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Students admitted into this program must be from rural Nebraska. The purpose of the program is to recruit and educate students from rural Nebraska who will return to practice in the rural areas of the state. This program represents a commitment and dedication to the education of Nebraskans and quality health care for the citizens of the state. Upon selection into the program, students are automatically pre-admitted into their specific program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Students are strongly encouraged and expected to return to the rural areas of Nebraska to practice.

This program offers the following options

  • Clinical Laboratory Science - Medical Technology: 3 yrs. at CSC, 3 mos. at UNMC at Omaha, 38 wks. clinical studies in rural Nebraska
  • Dental Hygiene: 2 yrs. at CSC, 2 yrs. at UNMC-College of Dentistry-West Division in Gering
  • Dentistry: 4 yrs. at CSC, 4 yrs. at UNMC-College of Dentistry in Lincoln
  • Medicine: 4 yrs. at CSC, 4 yrs. at UNMC in Omaha
  • Nursing: 4 semesters at CSC, 5 semesters at UNMC-College of Nursing in Scottsbluff
  • Pharmacy: 3 yrs. at CSC, 3 yrs. at UNMC, 1 yr of clerkships
  • Physical Therapy: 4 yrs. at CSC, 3 yrs. at UNMC in Omaha
  • Physician Assistant: 4 yrs. at CSC, 13 mos. at UNMC in Omaha, 15 mos. clinical practice in rural Nebraska
  • Radiography: 2 yrs. at CSC, 3 yrs. at UNMC in Omaha

The Program

The Rural Health Opportunities Program is a cooperative program between Chadron State College (CSC) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). The purpose of the program is to recruit and educate students from rural Nebraska who will return to practice in rural areas of the state. This program represents a commitment and dedication to the education of Nebraskans and quality health care for citizens of the state.

Who Can Apply

To be eligible for RHOP, the applicant MUST:

  1. Be a rural Nebraska resident (Omaha and Lincoln areas are excluded).
  2. Be a Nebraska high school graduate.
  3. Have applied and been accepted to Chadron State College.
  4. Apply to only the Chadron State College OR Wayne State College RHOP program.
  5. Be committed to practice in a rural Nebraska area.
  6. Be enrolled at CSC for the entirety of their discipline guidelines.
  7. If a nontraditional student: must be willing to begin their work at CSC as a freshman, regardless of previous education.

Selection Guidelines

Numerous factors are always a part of the selection process. Special consideration will be given to applicants who:

  • Have a true understanding of the discipline of choice
  • Demonstrate strong academic potential
  • Have an understanding of the RHOP program
  • Are committed to returning to rural areas of Nebraska to practice
  • Are from rural Nebraska

December 1 Deadline

Applications must be completed on-line and printed. The application packet must include the application, three letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes), a copy of the ACT scores, and high school and college transcripts. Please mail to: CSC Health Professions Office, 1000 Main St., Chadron, NE 69337. It is the applicant's responsibility to verify a complete application prior to the December 1 deadline.
