LASSI Assessment

The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) is an assessment tool designed to measure the student's use of learning and study strategies methods. It is a diagnostic and prescriptive measure. The focus is on both covert and overt thoughts and behaviors, which relate to successful learning. The student's thought processes <b>and</b> behaviors contribute significantly to success in post-secondary education. This assessment is used to assess student strengths and identify areas where effective learning strategies may be developed.

The LASSI is used at over 1,100 academic institutions in the United States alone. Studies indicate that graduation rates are higher for students who have taken the LASSI and developed better study skills than for students who have not taken the LASSI.

The LASSI is based on the theories:

1. That the key to learning is knowing how to learn.
2. With strategic learning students can learn better if they rethink and improve the way they approach learning.
3. Most students in school could bolster their performance, if they understood the learning process better.
4. Students control their own destiny.
5. Intelligence is a skill students develop.
