Chadron State’s RJ Boylan wrestles Adams State’s Jeff Schossow during their match at 285 pounds during Thursday’s dual at the Nelson Physical Activity Center in Chadron. Boylan, a redshirt freshman from Gillette, Wyo., won the match with a 3-2 decision.
CHADRON – Three Chadron State College freshmen wrestlers claimed victories during Thursday’s dual against Adams State but they weren’t enough as the Grizzlies won five of the last six matches en route to their 27-19 win.
With the win, Adams State, which is ranked 10th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II Top 25, improves to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Chadron State is 1-2 and 0-2 in the RMAC.
“Overall, I was pretty happy with the effort,” CSC head coach Scott Ritzen said. “Adams State is a very good team and they did a good top when they were on top of our guys. We know what we need to work on and we’re going to get better.”
CSC freshmen R.J. Boylan, Ryan Fillingame and Justin Dekok were the bright spots for the Eagles.
Boylan, a redshirt freshman from Gillette, Wyo., got a late escape in the third period for a 3-2 decision over Jeff Schossow at 285 pounds. It was Boylan’s first career dual victory.
Fillingame, a freshman from Hesperia, Calif., followed with a solid performance at 133. He led A.J. Alexander 4-2 after the first period and finished the match off with a pin at the 4:16 mark.
Dekok, a redshirt freshman from Kearney, outlasted Anthony Gomez at 165. Dekok owned a 1-0 lead after two periods but exploded for nine points in the final two minutes for a 10-0 major decision.
Cody Vasconcellos received a forfeit at 174 for CSC’s other win.
Adams State got wins from all four of its nationally ranked wrestlers as Arsenia Barksdale, Josh Hensley, Joey Deaguero and Kyle Sand each cruised to wins. Adams State’s Daniel Kelly and Torben Walters also won.
Chadron State will host Colorado School of Mines in another RMAC dual Saturday at the Nelson Physical Activity Center. The first match begins at 7 p.m.
