KEARNEY, Neb. - Chadron State College athletes set three school records Friday at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Twilight Meet.
Two of the records came in the pole vault. Freshman Glen Clinton of Cody, Wyo., went 15 feet, 4 ½ inches to break the men’s mark of 15-3 set in 2006 by Matt Hazen, and sophomore Kalen Prentice of Arnold topped 11- ¼ to shatter the women’s record of 10-8 ¾ that she shared with Kelli Payne.
Payne set the old record in 2007 and Prentice matched it last year.
The other CSC record was in the men’s shot put, where sophomore Cody Hunt of Lingle, Wyo., hit 57- ¼ to break the mark of 55-11 set by Doug Lytle in 1998. Hunt’s throw automatically qualifies him for NCAA Division II National Outdoor Meet in late May.
A pair of sprinters also excelled for the Eagles. Freshman Monique Fair of Denver and junior Jake Gruver won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
Fair’s time of 12.46 in the 100 was the sixth fastest in Chadron State history and her mark of 25.56 in the 200 was the fifth best all-time for the Eagles.
Gruver won the men’s 100 in 10.77 seconds and the 200 in 21.79, his career best.
CSC men also won the long and high jumps. Sophomore Lanar Newman of Kingston, Jamaica, had a season-best 23-3 ½ to win the long jump, where Eagles took four of the six places. Junior Jeff Brummer was second, sophomore Alex Petersen was fourth and junior John Ritzen was sixth.
Freshman Boomer McLaughlin of Sheridan, Wyo., won the high jump by clearing 6-6 ¾. Senior Riley Northrup was third at 6-4 ¾.
Newman also was third and Northrup was fifth in the triple jump.
In the women’s jumps, freshman Ashley Fanelli of Arvada, Colo., was second in the high jump, third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Junior Julia Bayer of Germany was third in the long jump and fifth in both the triple jump and high hurdles.
Both Bayer and Fanelli had season bests in the long jump, where Bayer went 17-11 ½ and Fanelli leaped 17-9.
Another Chadron State coed, freshman Ashley Riesen of Chadron, turned in a career-best 2:15.39 in the 800 meters at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls on Friday. It was the third fastest in CSC history, topped only by All-American Deb Spickelmier’s times in the late 1980s. Both Riesen and Joe Schultz of Alliance will run the 1500 at the Dakota Relays today (Saturday).
