The Chadron State College men’s 4x100 relay team placed sixth among 30 entries in the college division at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday.
The Eagles were timed in 41.79 seconds, their best of the season and the sixth fastest in school history. The time is the best among Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams this season. Members of the team were Lincoln Proud, Karl McFarlane, Lanar Newman and Jake Gruver.
Newman also was 10th among 23 entries in the long jump at the Drake Relays with a mark of 22-feet, 11 inches, about three inches below his seasonal best. McFarlane placed third in his heat of the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.84 seconds, about a half second below the school record time that he set earlier this season.
A handful of Eagles entered a meet at Hastings College on Saturday and did well.
Phil Rivera continued his impressive running after having major knee surgery last fall. He was third in the 400 meters with a career-best time of 48.88 seconds. The mark is just one one-hundredth of a second off the lead in the RMAC so far this season.
Also at Hastings, Jeff Brummer had a career-best mark of 22-10 ¼ while placing fourth in the long jump. Although he did not place, another CSC long jumper, Alex Petersen, went 22-1 ¼, also his career best.
The Eagles’ Glen Clinton, who has spent most of the spring practicing with the football team, was fifth in the pole vault at Hastings by clearning 14-5 ¼.
Two Eagles also threw the javelin at Hastings. Lance Steele was eighth at 151 feet and Sean Munger was ninth at 150-9. Munger is preparing to enter the decathlon at the RMAC Meet on May 9-10, and also long jumped, going 20-5 ½, and ran the high hurdles. He had not competed in either of the latter events previously.
