CHADRON - After competing hard in meets four consecutive weekends, most of the Chadron State College track and field athletes will get a break this weekend, but there are some exceptions.
The chance to enter the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, was too much to pass up for five CSC men. Coach Ryan Baily said a 4x100-meter relay team comprised of Lincoln Proud, Karl McFarlane, Lanar Newman and Jake Gruver will compete after their time of 42.05 seconds at Fort Hays State qualified them.
In addition, McFarlane will run the high hurdles, Newman will long jump and Cody Hunt will throw the shot put in Des Moines.
It is hoped that the stiff competition – the Drake Relays is a prestigious track and field event, featuring some of the best athletes in that nation – will bring out the best in them and their marks will meet NCAA Division II national qualifying standards.
At least four more Eagles are planning to enter other meets while tuning up for the RMAC Outdoor Meet in early May.
Glen Clinton, a freshman who also plays football and caught a long touchdown pass and kicked the winning field goal in the spring game on Saturday, will concentrate on the pole vault the remainder of the spring. He is planning to compete at Colorado State University in Fort Collins on Saturday, and will be accompanied by Lance Steele, who is seeking to hone his skills in the discus.
In addition, Jeff Brummer, whom Baily believes can earn points in the long jump at the conference meet, and Sean Munger, who will enter the decathlon at the conference showdown and can use some more practice in a couple events, will enter a meet at Hastings College, Baily said.
The Eagles will also enter the University of Nebraska-Kearney Twilight Meet on April 30 prior to the conference meet, which will be in Pueblo on May 9-11.
