Nov 14, 2009 - CSC wrestlers perform well at season-opening tourney

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Three Chadron State wrestlers placed in the top four during their first weekend of competition at the University of Wyoming Cowboy Open on Saturday.

Jimmy Savala, a two-time national qualifier, finished second at 141 pounds in the Elite Division, while Ryan Fillingame and Dustin Stodola finished first and fourth, respectively, in the Amateur Division.

Savala cruised through his first three matches before suffering a 6-5 loss to Air Force’s Cole VonOhlen in the championship.

Fillingame, a freshman from Hesperia, Calif., strung together five straight wins by decision to earn his first collegiate title at 133. He defeated Air Force’s Tyler Spangler by a 5-2 decision in the championship match.

Stodola, a freshman from Clarkson, Neb., finished with a 3-2 record at 125, including a 7-5 decision over Jordan White of Nebraska-Kearney in overtime to move into the consolation finals. Stodola was unable to keep  momentum going, though, and lost in the third place match to Chasen Tolbert, an unattached wrestler.

CSC head coach Scott Ritzen was pleased with the Eagles’ effort.

“I’m glad to get the first one over with and the kids worked hard,” he said. “We saw things we have to work on, but there was nothing wrong with the effort and that’s all I was looking for. Jimmy, Ryan and Dustin wrestled well, and Chris Leak did a really nice job for us.”

Leak shrugged off a first round loss at 174 and proceeded to win his next three matches, before falling in the consolation semifinals to Colorado School of Mines’ Ryan Swanson, 1-0.

Justin Dekok at 165 and Sam Udell at heavyweight, also earned wins for CSC in the Elite Division.

Amateur Division winners included Lance Jeffries at 149 and Jeremy Fillingame at 184.
