Chadron State rodeo team has big weekend at Wyoming

Members of the Chadron State College rodeo team saved their best for last.

Competing at the final rodeo of the season in the Central Rocky Mountain Region at the University of Wyoming this past weekend, Chadron State entries won four of the nine events, including all three of the women's events.

The CSC cowgirls won the team title by a wide margin and one of them, sophomore Amy Deichert of Spearfish, S.D., was the rodeo's all-around cowgirl after winning first in both the breakaway roping and the barrel race.

The other event winner was Shelby Winchell, a junior from Scottsbluff. She captured the women's goat tying and also qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo to take place in Casper, Wyo., June 9-15 by finishing third in the regional standings for the year in that event.

In addition, Winchell placed fourth in the breakaway roping at the Wyoming rodeo. The stellar weekend saw her earn enough points to become the region's reserve all-around cowgirl for 2012-13. She will compete in both goat tying and breakaway roping at the college finals.

Chadron State's other event winner this weekend is senior Mitch McAdow of Littleton, Colo. He won the tie down roping and also wrapped up the tie down championship for the year and the right to rope at the finals next month.

Besides Winchell and McAdow, also competing at nationals will be CSC junior Amy Tierney of Oral and Hot Springs, S.D. She earned that honor when she was elected the student representative on the region's board of directors a year ago. She proved at the Wyoming rodeo that her participation in the finals won't be a fluke by placing second to Winchell in the goat tying.

Two more CSC cowboys also placed high at the rodeo in Laramie. Lane Day of Bartlett, Neb., finished third in steer wrestling and Colton Blanchard of Sulphur, La., was fourth in bareback riding.

Jake Kasselder of Ericson, Neb., was second in the first go-round of the steer wrestling, but did not get a score on his second run.

"We had a great weekend," CSC rodeo coach Dustin Luper said. "I am really proud of our group. It was our best rodeo of the season. Of course, not everything went perfect. We had some other people who could have qualified for nationals if things would have worked for them. It was a dream come true for several of them and heartbreak for a few others. I'm just glad it went as well as it did."

The placings and marks for those mentioned above follow:

Amy Deichert in breakaway roping—second in first go-round in 3.2 seconds, first in finals in 2.8 and first in averages.

Amy Deichert in barrel racing—second in both go-rounds in 15.23 and 15.06 seconds and first in averages.

Shelby Winchell in goat tying—first in both go-rounds in 7.0 and 6.9 seconds and first in averages.

Shelby Winchell in breakaway roping—fourth in first go-round in 3.8 seconds, fifth in finals in 4.0 and fourth in averages.

Mitch McAdow in tie down roping—sixth in first go-round in 13.3 seconds, first in finals in 10.5 and first in averages.

Amy Tierney in goat tying—second in both go-rounds in 7.2 seconds and 7.0 and second in averages.

Lane Day in steer wrestling—third in both go-rounds in 6.8 and 6.9 seconds and third in averages.

Colton Blanchard in bareback riding—third in first go-round with 71 points, fourth in finals with 74 and fourth in averages.

Jake Kasselder in steer wrestling—second in 6.6 seconds in first go-round. No time in the finals.

CSC entries still contending for trip to finals rodeo

No one from Chadron State College has nailed down a ticket to compete at the College National Finals Rodeo this season, but at least three CSC contestants can be among the qualifiers if they do well at the University of Wyoming rodeo in Laramie this weekend.

The UW Stampede will be the 10th and final rodeo in the Central Rocky Mountain Region this school year. Thousands of points have been earned at the previous nine rodeos, but not too many cowboys or cowgirls from the 25 teams (counting both men and women) in the region have clinched one of the three slots that are available in each event to compete at the CNFR in Casper on June 9-15.

CSC contestants with the best chances of qualifying for nationals are Mitch McAdow of Littleton, Colo., in tie down roping, Russell Hipke of Stuart in steer wrestling and Shelby Winchell of Scottsbluff in goat tying.

In addition, Devan Frye of Hyannis in breakaway roping and Collin Chytka of Broken Bow in steer wrestling could grab one of the three coveted slots at nationals if they excel this weekend.

Fortified by his first place finish April 20-22 at Casper College, McAdow now has 625 points for the season in tie down roping, putting him in second place in the regional standings. The event leader is Dane Kissack of Gillette College with 710 points. Tyler Schnaufer of the University of Wyoming is third with 540 points and James Wolf of Northeastern Junior College at Sterling, Colo., is fourth with 530.

McAdow earned 150 points for his victory at Casper two weeks ago, allowing him to pass Schnaufer and Wolf. Kissack added 120 points to his total by placing second at Casper, all but clinching one of the top three spots in the final standings.

Hipke picked up 90 points while placing third in steer wrestling at Casper and is now tied with Troy Wilcox of Eastern Wyoming College atop the regional standings with 320 points. But lots of "doggers" are close behind them.

Two contestants have 265 points to share third place in the standings and 11 others have at least 185 points, just 70 points behind Hipke and Wilcox. Two good runs in Laramie could vault any of them to the top of the list.

Among the dozen-plus contenders is CSC's Chytka, who has 220 points. That puts him 11th on the current list. But by placing first or second at the UW rodeo, he'd be at the top of the standings. He scored 160 points in mid-April by winning both go-rounds at the Eastern Wyoming rodeo.

Winchell has had a quiet spring, earning just 60 points in goat tying after having 440 at the end of the fall season and ranking second in the region. However, she's only 22.5 points out of third place, which belongs to Hayden Segelke of NJC. It will probably all boil down to which of them does the best this weekend. The No. 5 goat tier has 380 points, 120 behind Winchell.

Frey is also in a tenuous position. She's seventh in the breakaway standings with 190 points. University of Wyoming cowgirls have clinched the top two spots. Kaycee Nelson has 585 points and Lydia Coe has 450. But Ali Bilkey of Oreto College at LaJunta, Colo., is third with 255 points, leaving her "catchable." However, three other cowgirls also are ahead of Frey in the standings, meaning the senior from Hyannis probably will have to finish among the top three in at Laramie qualify for the national finals.

CSC coach Dustin Luper said the things will be mighty interesting at the UW rodeo. Each of the nine events still has at least one national qualifying spot available.

Luper added that CSC has one cowgirl who long ago salted down a trip to the national rodeo. She is Amy Tierney of Oral and Hot Springs. She claimed her ticket when she was elected the student member of the region's board of directors a year ago.

Although Tierney is not among the contenders for one of the three qualifying slots in any of the women's three events, she's one of the few cowgirls in the region who has earned points in all three. She's a capable hand and has scored 120 points in both the barrel race and breakaway roping and 75 in goat tying.

Two CSC contestants win events at Casper rodeo

CASPER, Wyo. - Two Chadron State College contestants won events at the Casper College rodeo last weekend.

For the second time this spring, sophomore Katie Loughran of Broken Bow and her horse, "Blowing Smoke," won both go-rounds of the barrel race to capture that event. Their times at Casper were 15.87 and 15.80 seconds.

Chadron State's other event winner was senior Mitch McAdow of Littleton, Colo. He finished third in the first go-round of tie down roping in 11.0 seconds and was second in the finals go-round in 10.6 seconds to win the averages.

Another Chadron State cowboy, Russell Hipke of Stuart, did well in steer wrestling. He tied for seventh in the first go-round in 6.6 seconds and was second in the finals in 4.6 seconds to place third in the averages.

Unofficially, Hipke is now tied for first in steer wrestling for the season in the Central Rocky Mountain Region and McAdow is second in tie down roping.

The only rodeo remaining in the region is May 3-5 at the University of Wyoming. The contestants with the top three point totals at the end of the regional competition qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper on June 9-15.

Two more CSC entries also placed among the top six in the averages at the Casper rodeo.

Colten Blanchard of Sulphur, La., was fifth in the bareback riding averages. He tied for 10th in the first go-round with 67 points and shared first place in the finals with 74 points.

Shelby Winchell of Scottsbluff was sixth in the goat tying. She shared eighth place in the first go-round in 8.4 seconds and was second in the finals in 7.7 seconds. She is still in fourth place in the regional standings, but unofficially is only 22.5 points out of third place.

Three Chadron State entries placed among the top 10 in the first go-round, but did not receive a score in the finals on Sunday. They are Jace Blackwell of Rapid City in saddle bronc riding, Devan Frey of Hyannis in breakaway roping and team ropers Kourt Starr of Dupree, S.D., and Lane Day of Bartlett, Neb.

In addition, Bailey McKay of Ericson, Neb., tied for fifth in the first go-round of the barrel race in 16.09 seconds, but her time of 16.53 on the second run left her out of the top six in the averages.
