HAYS, Kan. – All-Americans Jazmyn Webster and Cody Hunt were the leaders again for the Chadron State College track and field team on Saturday at the Fort Hays State Quadrangular Meet. Both improved upon their school records while winning events.
Webster, a sophomore from Cheyenne East, went 5 feet, 9 and three-fourths inches in the high jump to break the school record of 5-7 that she shared with Patrice Henson.
Hunt, a junior from Lingle, Wyo., threw the shot 59-10 ½ to better the school record of 59-7 that he established two weeks ago at the Eagles’ first outdoor meet of the season.
Both athletes are automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II Meet in May.
Webster also had a season-best of 18- ½ while placing second in the long jump Saturday and Hunt also was fifth in the discus with a throw of 149-5.
Another CSC athlete, sophomore Charith Kapukptuwa, a native of Sri Lanka, was fourth in the discus at 154-8 and second in the shot put at 51-6 ¼, both career bests.
Two CSC male sprinters won their races Saturday. Dean Francis of Jamaica won the 200 meters in 21.61 seconds and Phil Rivera of Apple Valley, Calif., took the 400 in 49.24.
Senior Lincoln Proud of Pinedale, Wyo., was second in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 54.41 seconds
Junior Kaelie Jelden of Eaton, Colo., placed second in the pole vault with a career best of 11-5 ¾. Also placing second for the CSC women was Ashley Riesen of Chadron, who ran the 1500 in 4:44.22. Riesen also was third in the 800 in 2:18.88, just a second off of her career best.
Freshman Josie Pehringer of Cody, Wyo., was third in the women’s pole vault at 10-11 ¾.
Sophomore Alyssa Norton placed in all four of the throwing events. She was second in the discus, fifth in the hammer throw and sixth in both the shot put and the hammer throw.
Pittsburg State of Kanas won both team standings. The Eagles were fourth in both of the team competitions. Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State were the other entries.
