HAYS, Kan. – For the second straight year, Chadron State College’s Jordan Debus has qualified for the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships.

Debus, a sophomore from Mitchell, lost his first match at 184 pounds during Saturday’s opening round but he rallied to win three straight elimination matches before coming out on top during a true fourth place bout Sunday afternoon at the Super Region 4 Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Fort Hays State.

The top four at each weight qualify for the championships, which begin March 9 in Pueblo, Colo.

“Jordan had a tough route after he got pinned in his first match but he had a gut check,” CSC coach Scott Ritzen said. “His knee was hurt but caught fire and won three in a row before gutting out the win in the true fourth place match. He really wrestled hard for us.”

Debus lost to Ryan Swanson of Colorado Mesa but then earned three straight wins, beginning with a gritty 2-1 decision over Western State’s Kyle Platt. He then followed with a dominant 16-1 technical fall over Brett Sanchez on Saturday.

On Sunday, he avenged an early season loss to New Mexico Highlands’ Igor Gomzin by earning a 5-3 decision before falling to Nebraska-Kearney’s Ross Brunkhardt 3-1 for third place.

Since Debus hadn’t wrestled Pueblo’s Adam Carey, who earned fifth place, the two wrestled to determine a true fourth place winner. Debus won that match, 4-3.

The rest of the Eagles still alive during the two-day tourney didn’t fare as well during Sunday’s matches, especially in the consolation semifinals. Leandro Arias at 141, Bret Klopp at 174, Chris Leak at 197 and R.J. Boylan at 285 made it through the first day of the regional tourney but all four fell in the match before the medal round and finished in sixth place.

The University of Nebraska-Kearney won the team title with 115 points, while Grand Canyon was second with 108.5. Chadron State finished ninth with 39.5 points.
