GUNNISON, Colo. – The Western State men’s basketball team outscored Chadron State by a 26-13 margin in the game’s final nine minutes en route to its 70-57 victory Saturday.
The Eagles, now 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, led by as many as 14 points in the first half but the Mountaineers weathered Chadron State’s early lead and trailed 33-27 at halftime.
In the second half, Western State took its first lead (47-46) when Steven Aldridge hit a 3-pointer with nine minutes to play. Following Aldridge’s trey, Western State went on a quick 12-3 run and didn’t let the Eagles get closer than eight points the rest of the way.
In the final 20 minutes, Western State shot 59 percent from the field, while Chadron State shot 32 percent from the field.
Aldridge finished with a game-high 20 points and Alex Hart added 17. Aldridge and Hart, both guards, combined to shoot 15 for 16 from the foul line.
Kevin McClelland led the Eagles with 14 points but he was the only CSC player in double figures. Sammy Hines scored nine, Tim McDavid had seven and Chris Curtis finished with six points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Chadron State will host Regis University Friday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
