GUNNISON, Colo. – The Western State College women’s basketball team had four players score in double figures it its 77-66 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Chadron State Saturday at Paul Wright Gymnasium.
Chadron State (0-6 overall, 0-2 RMAC) owned a 46-38 lead with less than 15 minutes to play after Kaitlin Petri, who finished with a game-high 23 points, sank a pair of free throws, but the Mountaineers went on a 23-8 scoring run over the next 10 minutes to take control of the game.
The Eagles cut the Mountaineers’ lead to three points several times during the final five minutes but Western State also responded by making its foul shots. During the second half, Western sank 19 of 24 from the foul line, while Chadron State made 15 of 23.
The Mountaineers also took advantage of the Eagles’ turnovers, especially in the second half when the Western State scored 18 points off 10 CSC miscues.
Katie Hall and Nikki Trujillo each led Western State with 15 points, Jaylan Spencer scored 13 and Jessica Lankton added 10 as the Mountaineers improved to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the RMAC.
Chadron State also had four players finish in double figures. Petri scored 23 points but did much of her damage from the charity stripe where she made 16 of 20. Marla Munsen scored 12 and had a team-high six rebounds and Dallas Shaw and Lexi Smidt both chipped in 10.
The Eagles will play their next four games at home, beginning with Regis University Friday at 6 p.m.
