CHADRON – Bonus points proved to be the difference in Dickinson State’s close 22-16 victory over Chadron State in a non-conference wrestling dual Wednesday evening at the Nelson Physical Activity Center.
The Blue Hawks, who are currently ranked 13th in the latest NAIA rankings, scored bonus points in three of their four wins, including a forfeit at 125 pounds and a pin by Steven Urquizo over CSC’s Jordan Debus at 184 to outlast the Eagles in a competitive dual that wasn’t settled until the next-to-last bout.
Chadron State, now 4-8 overall, won five matches overall, but Dustin’s Stodola 12-4 major decision over Kevin Hansen at 133 pounds was the only match that scored bonus points for the Eagles. The four other winners for CSC – Jimmy Savala, Mikah Kadera, Trent Zempel and Sam Udell – all earned hard-fought decisions.
Savala, a senior from Clovis, Calif., wrestled up a weight to claim his 17th victory of the season when he clipped No. 10 Jordan Ewen 8-6 at 149.
Kadera followed with a 7-2 decision over Brad Steele at 157 and Trent Zempel cruised to an 8-2 decision over Brady Burgess at 174.
Udell capped the dual off with a spirited 4-3 decision over Cody Jamtgaard at heavyweight. Udell led 3-0 entering the third period, but he needed an escape with 35 seconds left to preserve the win.
In addition to Sergio Martinez’s forfeit at 125 and Urquizo’s pin at 184 pounds, Dickinson State’s Adam Orton earned a 13-2 major decision over Josh McCance. The Blue Hawks’ other win came at 197 when George Hargrove nipped Chris Leak, 5-3.
The Eagles will host Colorado State University-Pueblo in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Following the dual, the Eagles’ Booster Club will have a reception for the wrestling team at Country Kitchen. The public is invited.
