CHADRON – The University of Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team won eight of nine matches en route to its 33-2 win over Chadron State College in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual Thursday evening in Chadron.
The Lopers, ranked No. 11 in the latest Division II rankings, started the dual with a forfeit victory at 125 pounds and never let the Eagles in it after storming to victories in five straight matches.
Trent Zempel, who earned a 7-2 decision over Drew Comito at 174 pounds was the lone CSC victor. He owned a 2-0 lead after the first period and scored four more points in the second after a reversal and a takedown. He secured his seventh point by having two minutes, 31 seconds of riding time, the most by any wrestler during Thursday’s dual.
Chadron State’s momentum was short-lived, though, after UNK, now 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the RMAC, squeaked by to win its final three matches by a combined four points.
UNK’s Ross Brunkhardt used a reversal and riding time to nip Jordan Debus 7-5 at 184 pounds and Christian Flavin followed with a tight 10-9 decision over Chris Leak in the night’s most exciting match.
The two 197 pounders combined to score 11 points in the first period, including a pair of penalty points for each wrestler as well as a one-point team deduction for CSC, and maintained that intensity the remainder of the match. In the third period, Flavin took a 10-8 lead in the final minute following a reversal and fended off Leak the rest of the way to survive.
At heavyweight, Sam Udell and No. 4-ranked Ben Hohensee were tied at 2-2 entering the third period but an early escape in the period saved Hohensee from the upset.
The Eagles, now 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the RMAC, will host No. 9 Western State Saturday at the Nelson Physical Activity Center. The dual begins at 7 p.m.
