Adams State nips Chadron State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State’s Arsenia Barksdale earned a hard-fought 5-1 decision over Chadron State’s Devlon Webb at 125 pounds to clinch a 24-22 victtory for the Grizzlies during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual Saturday in Alamosa, Colo.

Barksdale, ranked No. 2 in the latest NWCA rankings, improves to 16-5 overall, while Webb, ranked No. 5, falls to 19-13.

The No. 9 ranked Grizzlies won six matches during the dual to improve to 5-1-1 overall and 5-1 in the RMAC.

Chadron State, ranked No. 14, is now 6-4-1 in duals and 3-1-1 in the RMAC.

The Grizzlies started the dual out strong by winning their first four matches to take a commanding 17-0 lead. Dominic Valencia began the dual by pinning Ryan Zavala at 133, No. 1 Raymond Dunning followed with a 10-7 decision over No. 8 Jimmy Savala at 141, Nick Dionisio decisioned Jake Lords 7-1 at 149, and No. 2 Noomis Jones earned a technical fall over Phillip Bullington.

However, the Eagles responded and picked up a big win at 165 when Bryan Irwin pinned Omar Gonzales at 165. Brett Hunter, ranked No. 5 nationally, cruised to a 15-3 major decision over Don Medina at 174 as the Eagles cut the deficit to 17-10.

Adams State’s Kyle Sand increased the Grizzlies’ lead to 21-10 by claiming an 11-1 major decision over Ty Brown at 184, but the Eagles answered again by earning bonus points in their next two matches. CSC’s Josh Majerus earned six points for a forfeit victory and Shaine Odell pinned Josh Teeples at heavyweight in the first period to give the Eagles a 22-21 lead heading into the final match.

But Barksdale was too tough for Webb to handle and Adams State escaped with the victory.

The Eagles will wrap up their regular season schedule by hosting their final three matches at home, beginning with a dual against Mesa State on Thursday in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.
