Chadron State wrestlers go one-two at National Duals

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Chadron State College wrestling team won one dual and lost two Saturday during the NCAA Division II National Duals in the Northern Iowa Dome in Cedar Falls.

Mercyhurst College of Pennsylvania beat the Eagles 26-18 in the opening round, but Chadron State downed Limestone College of South Carolina 25-12 in the consolation bracket before Upper Iowa took a 27-18 victory in the second round of the consolation action.

Chadron State seniors Brett Hunter and Josh Majerus, both national champions during their careers, won all three of their matches Saturday. With his second victory, Hunter, a 174-pounder this season, became the Eagles’ all-time winningest wrestler with 112 victories, passing Justin Hoopman and Joe Callahan, both of whom had 111 wins at CSC.

Hoopman concluded his career in 1998 and Callahan completed his in 2002.

Majerus’ three wins Saturday gives him 99 for his career. One more victory will make him the eighth Chadron State wrestler with 100 wins. He competes at 197 pounds.

Majerus is now 16-3 and Hunter is 15-6 this season.

Three more Eagles won twice and lost once during the duals. They are Devlon Webb at 125 pounds, Jimmy Savala at 141 and Ty Brown at 184. Ryan Zavala at 133 pounds, Brian Easterling at 157 and Shaine Odell at heavyweight all won once.

The Eagles entered the National Duals ranked No. 14 in Division II. Mercyhurst was ninth and Upper Iowa was eighth in the rankings.

Chadron State will be at home host Colorado State-Pueblo and Dickinson State of North Dakota for duals on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15 and 16, respectively. The dual against Colorado State Pueblo begins at 7 p.m., while the Dickinson State dual has been moved up to 5 p.m.
