Willy Jones leads Eagles at UNC Tourney

None of Chadron State’s entries in the Old Chicago-Northern Colorado Open Wrestling Tournament on Sunday placed, but sophomore Willy Jones of Chadron went 5-2 at 174 pounds and freshman Jimmy Savala of Clovis, Calif., went 4-2 at 133 pounds.

Both of Savala’s losses were to Jesse Cruz of Western State, who placed third at 133 pounds. One of Jones’ losses was to Evan Copeland of Adams State, who finished fourth at 174.

Another CSC entry, sophomore John Latham of Camp Crook, S.D., had a winning record, going 3-2 at 157 pounds.

The tournament attracted more than a dozen teams from as far away as Virginia and throughout the western United States.

None of the Eagles’ 10 varsity members who participated in the Colorado Mines Dual Tournament on Saturday participated in the Northern Colorado tourney.

The Eagles will be idle over Thanksgiving weekend. Their next action will be on Thursday, Nov. 30, when they will visit Central Oklahoma at Edmond. The Bronchos were ranked No. 1 in the preseason NCAA Division II poll.
