South Dakota women defeat Chadron State 90-52

CHADRON—Junior Vanessa Yanez scored 20 points, freshman Bridget Yoerger added 19 and senior Meghan Woster handed out 13 assists Saturday afternoon as the University of South Dakota women’s basketball team romped to a 90-52 victory over Chadron State in a non-conference game.

Bolstered by three consecutive 3-pointers by Yanez, the Coyotes, jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first six minutes and were never threatened.

South Dakota sank eight of 19 treys in the first half while building a 46-17 lead. The visitors shot 48.4 percent (15-31) from the field in the first half and hit 53.1 percent (17-32) in the second half while employing all 10 players about equally.

The Eagles, who seemed unsure of themselves as they opened the game, hit just 18 percent from the field (4-22) in the first half, but improved to 40 percent (12-30) in the second half while scoring 35 points.

However, the Eagles remained cold from long range, hitting just two of 16 shots from behind the arc. The Coyotes also outrebounded CSC 41-31.

The Eagles’ only senior, Bec Kyba, led her team in scoring with 13 points. Freshman Krisha Sibrel added 11, nine of them in the second half.

Yoerger tallied 14 of her 19 points in the second half.

South Dakota opened its season at home with an 83-44 victory over Chadron State.

The Eagles are now 1-10 for the season. They will play at Mesa State and Western State on the Western Slope of Colorado this coming Thursday and Friday nights in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests.
