CHADRON – Chadron State College rodeo team members didn’t win any firsts, but they picked up four second place finishes at the Gillette College rodeo last weekend when the spring schedule in the Central Rocky Mountain Region got underway.
The runners-up were Brandi Cwach of Geddes, S.D., in goat tying, Lane Day of Bartlett, Neb., in tie down roping, Cordell Martin of Panhandle, Texas, in bull riding and Prestyn Novak of Newell, S.D., in team roping.
Cwach completed her runs in 7.5 and 7.3 seconds, Day roped and tied his calves in 11.3 and 10.4 seconds and Martin was one of just two bull riders to stay aboard until the eight-second buzzer sounded following both trips out of the chute and had scores of 74 and 79 points.
Novak’s team roping partner was Colby Hetzel of Sheridan College. Their times were not available.
A newcomer to the Chadron State team, Miles Englebert of Edgemont, South Dakota, rode only one bull at the Gillette rodeo, but his 72-point score gave him fourth place in the final standings. He transferred to CSC at the start of the second semester.
In addition, Rylee Rutten of Colome, S.D., was among the 10 finalist on Sunday in breakaway roping, but she did not catch her second calf.
Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington will stage its rodeo this weekend.
