Ten Chadron State College students attended The Wildlife Society Western Conclave in mid-March. The students watched Sandhill Cranes land on the Platte River near Fort Kearny.

Each student was given the opportunity to choose from a variety of different field trips March 16.

Amanda Hicks, Valentine, Neb., selected the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center blind on the Platte River. She attended a two-hour photography workshop by renowned Nebraska nature photographer Michael Forsberg.

“He taught us the basics of good photography and how we need to tell stories with our photographs. It was an overall awesome time and I can't wait for next year,” Hicks said.

One CSC student traveled to a raptor recovery center near Lincoln where she observed various species of birds of prey.

The remainder of the group attended a workshop where they learned the basics of trapping and skinning a raccoon, methods for selling the pelts and their value in the marketplace.

Other students attending the conclave included Ashlee Wright of Alliance, Neb., Jason Clark, Papillion, Neb., Kalen Grint of Sargent, Neb., Adam Deiterman of Orchard, Neb., Brandon Werner of Lindsay, Neb., Nathan Pflueger of Staplehurst, Neb., Cody Kyhn of Boelus, Neb.; Jarrett Johnson of Chadron; and Timmy Ornelas of Fort Lupton, Colo.

After returning from their field trips, students from 12 colleges and universities reconvened for dinner in Lincoln.

The Wildlife Society Western Conclave will be in Kingsville, Texas next year. More information about the society can be found at: www.wildlife.org.
