Nebraska State College System announces Counseling Excellence Award

December 3, 2013

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska State College System has named Fran Hassler the eighth NSCS Counseling Excellence Award recipient. Hassler, who has been the guidance counselor at Ponca High School since 1995, served as a home economics teacher at PHS prior to becoming a guidance counselor.

Hassler also worked as an admissions representative at Mount Marty College in S.D.

The Counseling Excellence Award was created to honor high school guidance counselors for exemplary service and commitment to students. Students at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges have the opportunity to nominate high school counselors for the award.

The award recipient is honored at a banquet held in conjunction with an NSCS Board of Trustees meeting.

Hassler was recognized at the Board of Trustees meeting at Wayne State College on November 14. Several friends and family members attended the banquet with Hassler

In addition to the recognition ceremony, the NSCS sponsors award recipients who wish to attend the annual Great Plains Association for College Admission Counseling regional conference in Overland Park, Kan. each April. GPACAC is one of 23 state and regional affiliates of the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

NSCS Chancellor Stan Carpenter shared with the audience that Hassler and her husband recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and that they also traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. for the international balloon fiesta, something Hassler had on her bucket list.

Carpenter also told of Hassler’s giving nature in her community. Hassler recently made seven pies and delivered them around town to folks she thought needed some treats and good cheer. While regaling Hassler for her thoughtfulness and good deeds, Carpenter reminded Hassler that cherry is his favorite pie.

Hassler said, “After learning more about this award and having attended the NSCS Board of Trustees dinner, I am flattered to be receiving such an amazing award. In fact, I am so humbled and very honored to represent the work of professional guidance counselors across our state as the recipient of the 2013 NSCS Counseling Excellence Award. Thank you very much.”

Board member, Bob Engles said, “We are fortunate to have Fran working diligently to help high school students select the right college or university. My fellow board members and I appreciate her work not only on behalf of Chadron, Peru and Wayne State, but for all higher education institutions in Nebraska.”
