A Chadron State College men’s flag football team gained some experience and returned home with know-how to improve their game after participating in a regional flag football tournament in Lincoln earlier this month.
The twelve members of the team are Derek Janssen, Rushville; Dylan Wisroth, Torrington, Wyo.; Jacob Kasselder, Erickson; DaJuan Turner, Colorado Springs, Colo., Brandon Goodrich, Gordon; Cody Wilson, Scottsbluff; Braydon Pritchett, Evergreen, Colo.; Derek Powers, Arthur; Tim McDavid, Scottsbluff; Jordan Ottoson, Potter; Nick Smith, Colorado Springs, Colo. and Zackary Rada, Scottsbluff.
These players qualified for the team by their level of competition in intramural league play at CSC. Captain Dylan Wisroth made arrangements for composing the team.
Chris Green, Nelson Physical Activity Center coordinator, said that even though the team was eliminated from the tourney in two games, it is was good for CSC to be represented in a new event and for the students to have a new experience. He thanked head CSC football coach Jay Long for the use of his team’s old jerseys, which were some of the best at the event.
The Campus Activities Board paid the entry fee for the team.
Kasselder said, “It was a good experience. Now we know what to expect next year.”
McDavid said, “We’ll use what learned in this tournament. We understand the game better now and we can bring that know-how to all the teams here on campus.”
The team’s first loss of 41-39 was to a UNL Fraternity A team, Farmhouse. Their second loss, 33-14, was to a University of Colorado-Greeley team called In It To Win It.
Thirty-three teams participated in the bracket - 21 men’s, nine co-recreational and three women’s.
Green had worked on the 2012 officials committee of the tournament and served on the all-tournament committee this year. He played flag football two years when he was a student at UNC. Prior to that, he got experience by volunteering on the all-tournament committee of the flag football tourney hosted by Western Kentucky University.
He has tentative plans to take a CSC men’s basketball team to an intramural tournament in Lincoln in March.
