Chadron State College students have been busy assisting both community residents and working on campus picking up broken trees branches left by Winter Storm Atlas.
Dr. Teresa Frink led about 42 students from courses she teaches and members of the Wildlife Club in campus cleanup after the storm. She felt the physical work was a very good outlet for them especially as the waves of news hit about cattle losses that affected their neighbors and loved ones.
“I could hear the sorrow in their voices, not only for the financial devastation and loss of livestock, but also because they couldn’t be at home to help. I believe the opportunity gave them a sense of peace knowing that although they were not able to help their families and friends, their strong minds and backs could help elsewhere,” she said.
The CSC Campus Activities Board and Student Senate co-sponsored an afternoon cleanup assisting both community residents and working on campus.
Gloves and rakes were provided for the approximately 60 students and 10 staff and faculty who met at the Lindeken Clock Tower before dispersing for the service project.
Dr. Jo Forstrom, dean of liberal arts, said, "It was inspiring to see our students, faculty and staff turn out to support and assist the campus and community in its cleanup efforts. "
Chadron City Manager Wayne Anderson said many tremendous groups of CSC volunteers are continuing to help as recently as this weekend. He added that when the ground dries and tree specialists in aerial trucks can finish their work in Wilson Park, more grounds crews will be needed.
He said, "I really appreciate the time that CSC students have taken to help in the parks and around town. The groups in Kenwood saved our city crews a full day of work there. It's a really neat feeling to have people tell me that they got back from a trip and their yard was cleaned for them. Who do you thank? I know lots of people are helping anonymously and we are grateful."
