Campus Arboretum Volunteers to plant shrubs and bunch grasses April 27

April 20, 2013

Chadron State College Campus Arboretum Volunteers and several student service groups will meet April 27 at 9 a.m. at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. Lucinda Mays, CSC horticulturist will present a mini lesson covering design considerations and answering questions about plant spacing.

The group will then proceed to plant teaching collections of 600 shrubs and 120 bunch grasses native to the region. The volunteers will lay drip irrigation and connect it to the 3,500 gallon above-ground water storage tank in Burkhiser which is filled by the building's roof rain and snow run-off.

The 11,000 square foot bed on the west face of the Burkhiser slope will be mulched with shredded and chipped pine depending upon the size of the group and weather conditions.  The project will be finished by CSC staff if needed.

Families with children are always welcome and this workday is another great opportunity for kids and parents to get involved.  Come dressed for weather and bring questions, ideas and hand tools.

The Campus Arboretum Volunteer events are held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. All events begin at the Sandoz Center on the CSC Campus and all ages and experience levels are welcome.
