Three Chadron State College contestants were event winners at the Colorado State University rodeo in Fort Collins over the weekend.
All three of the champions are from Nebraska. Devan Frey of Hyannis won the breakaway roping, Katie Loughran of Broken Bow was first in the barrel race and Russell Hipke of Stuart was the steer wrestling winner.
Frey had identical times of 3.1 seconds. She was third in the first go-round and had the fastest time in the finals. Her cumulative time of 6.2 seconds was 1.6 seconds faster than the runner-up. She earned 160 points in the system that is used to determine the regional leaders while no one else earned more than 100.
Loughran also had a great rodeo. Her times of 14.59 and 14.31 seconds won both go-rounds and she earned 170 points, 35 more than the runner-up. It was just the second rodeo of the season for Loughran, who missed the fall schedule after having shoulder surgery.
Hipke tied for eighth in the first go-round of the steer wrestling in 5.8 seconds, but won the championship go-round in 4.5 seconds to claim his event title by seven-tenths of a second.
Hipke also won the steer wrestling at the Colorado State rodeo a year ago, when his two runs added up to the same as this year, 10.3 seconds.
Two more Chadron State entries also placed among the top six in the averages of their events.
They are Derek Powers of Arthur, who was fifth in tie down roping with times of 10.2 and 12.4 seconds and team ropers Gaby Beragnolli of Sierra Valley, Calif., and Jace Blackwell of Rapid City, S.D., who completed their first run in 9.4 seconds, but, like several others, took a no time in the finals.
Also for Chadron State, Amy Deichert of Spearfish, S.D., was among the 10 barrel racers to make the finals, but her times of 14.85 and 14.98 seconds left her in eighth place overall.
In addition, Shelby Winchell of Scottsbluff was a finalist in the goat tying, but her second goat came untied.
Eastern Wyoming College at Torrington will host this weekend’s rodeo in the Central Rocky Mountain Region.
