Chadron State College Campus Arboretum Volunteers are kicking off a new year Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.
“We are excited about our fifth year of volunteer events. The 2013 activities are centered around the one of our most requested topics - elements of garden design,” said CSC Public Horticulturist Lucinda Mays. The event will include a mini-lesson on the placement of trees in a residential landscape. There will also be time dedicated to sharing seed catalogs, seed swapping and packaging.
“We invite anyone interested in sharing their experience growing plants in the high plains, or those interested in learning more, to join us. Folks who have left over seeds from last year or seed catalogs are encouraged to bring some to share,” Mays said. Volunteers will go home with a hand-packaged packet of flower seeds from campus gardens. Families with children are always welcome.
The Campus Arboretum Volunteers host "learn and work" days on campus about every six to eight weeks. The 2013 calendar features elements of design relating to tree pruning and planting, plant placement in the spring and dirt work in the fall. These events take place Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. All events begin at the Sandoz Center on the CSC Campus and all ages and experience levels are encouraged to participate.
