Sports information office garners writing award

Chadron State College sports information director Alex Helmbrecht is a district winner in the 2012 College Sports Information Directors of America Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest.

Helmbrecht’s story “Gamble grinds to conference title in decathlon,” on Brad Gamble’s tough route to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference track and field championship was named the Event Coverage of the Year in District 7. The district includes more than 140 schools, including major universities, in nine states.

Since becoming the sports information director in August 2007, Helmbrecht has claimed seven awards in the Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, including four first place District 7 awards in event coverage.

The 2012 contest drew 330 total entries. Submissions were first judged at the district level with district winners advancing to a national committee.

All district and national winners will be recognized at the CoSIDA Annual Convention in St. Louis, Mo.
