CHADRON – By shooting a pair of 58s, Tom Simons of Chadron, his sons Brett and Scott, along with Rob Stack, also of Chadron, won the championship flight during the 18th annual Chadron State College Don Beebe Golf Classic over the weekend at Ridgeview Country Club.
The winners’ 116 total after 36 holes was five strokes better than the runner-up team composed of Dan and Jens Johnson and their relatives, Judd and Jesse Norman of Billings, Mont., carded. The second place team shot a 59 on Saturday, but their score grew to 64 on Sunday for a 123 total.
Third place in the championship flight went to Marty and Tim Connealy of Chadron and Rick and Collin Petri of Kearney with rounds of 62 and 63 for a 125 score. Tim Connealy and the Petris were members of last year’s winning team that bested the Simons and Stack team by three strokes—122 to 125—for top honors.
This was the fifth time since 2005 that the Simons brothers, who now live out of state, have played on the tournament’s winning team. Stack has been a member of the same team four times and Tom Simons also was on it in 2010.
The first flight was won by Jim and Jeremy Gardner, Vince Ryan and Clyde Franklin, all of Chadron, with a 132 total. Jamie Roes of Chadron, his sons Cody and Brady and son-in-law Tim Collins shot a 139 to win the second flight.
The third flight was won by Bob Bargen, Randy Burk, Craig Clarke and Jerry Evans, who used a scorecard playoff to win the playoff after shooting a 143 to tie Russ Bohnenkamp, Harold Krueger, Phil Jensen and Ron Meints at the top of the flight.
