CHADRON – The Chadron State College women’s golf team has signed six student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Terri Connealy announced.
The incoming recruits certainly have a regional flair. Three are from Nebraska and one each is from South Dakota, Colorado and Wyoming.
They are Schuyler Wetzel of Hot Springs, S.D., Karissa Moreland of North Platte, Emma Harris and Nicole Pearson of Wahoo, Darcy Vernon of Wray, Colo., and Kelsey Williams of Moorcroft, Wyo.
In addition to being capable golfers, all six are all good students with GPAs ranging from 3.4 to 3.99.
At the beginning of this spring season, Wetzel’s average was 84 but she has medaled in most of the tournaments she’s played in and has shot a 76 at Hart Ranch and a 72 at Prairie Ridge in Box Elder, S.D. Last year, she finished sixth at the state tournament and played in the Best of the West.
Moreland, who has an average score of 82, is a three-time state qualifier and was named the North Platte Telegraph Girls Golfer of the Year following the fall season.
Harris was seventh at the Nebraska state tournament in 2010 and added a third place finish in 2011. She averaged 83 strokes during tournament play.
Pearson played the No. 2 position at Wahoo behind teammate Harris. She averaged 102 strokes and was a three-year letter winner.
Vernon, who averages a round of 85 during tourneys, has qualified for the Colorado State tournament each year of high school and has finished in the top half of the field three times.
Williams also had a successful high school career. She was the Wyoming State Champion in 2011, as well as being the conference champ. She also helped lead Moorcroft Secondary to team titles in 2010 and 2011 and was a two-time all-state and three-time all-conference selection.
