Before you decide there is just no way that you can afford to participate in the study abroad program, you should know that there are several funding sources for which you may be eligible, which include federal financial aid.
Chadron State College faculty have developed a variety of short-term study abroad experiences in the summer and winter interim break. Most summer experiences begin during spring semester and conclude with a two to three week study tour in a foreign country. Students enroll for CSC courses designated by the faculty coordinator and pay for tuition and fees through CSC. These courses must be required toward your program of study to qualify for financial aid consideration.

Semester-based programs are ideal for students seeking maximum cultural immersion while studying in another country. Working with experienced third-party organizations, Chadron State College offers semester-based programs in countries in much of the world. Chadron State College has selected a small number of providers with which to partner. These “approved” providers were chosen by CSC based on factors such as reputation, longevity, variety of program locations, student safety, cost, and quality of services provided. Students enroll and attend foreign institution and pay for educational expenses directly to either the provider or foreign institution. You will then have your academic credit transferred back to CSC upon completion of attendance. Students must have the transfer credit approved by CSC Registrar’s Office prior to departure and before financial aid eligibility can be determined. The courses must be required for the program of study.
For financial aid purposes, students are allowed to attend foreign institutions for a maximum of two semesters. Students must complete a concurrent enrollment form to qualify for Federal Student Aid.
Students who choose to enroll in programs that have not been approved by the CSC Study Abroad Office will not be eligible for financial aid through CSC and are not guaranteed academic credit acceptance by CSC.

Program cost varies considerably based on where the program is located, whether or not it is a semester or summer program, and other factors. Due to the relatively low-cost of Chadron State College, students can generally expect the cost of most semester-based programs to be somewhat higher than a semester at CSC. Short-term programs abroad tend to be less expensive than full semesters. Other factors that will influence the cost of studying abroad include foreign currency exchange rates, transportation costs, cost of living in the host country, services provided by the host institution or the program provider, and tuition and fees of the host university.
Students who have not applied for federal financial aid must first complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. Once students have been declared eligible for financial aid and have been accepted to a CSC study abroad program, they simply contact the CSC Financial Aid Office for assistance in completing the necessary information. The CSC Financial Aid Office will work with the program provider to determine the total eligible costs and will attempt to structure an aid package that covers as much of the cost as the student is eligible to receive. These costs include tuition, fees, meals, housing, transportation/airfare, passport and some personal expenses. Depending on your particular financial status, you may or may not be awarded aid that covers the entire cost of the program. If the costs are more than the aid will cover, it may be possible to cover the remaining amount through other sources such as scholarships or loans. While there are many scholarships available for study abroad, The Gilman International Scholarship Program is one program that every student receiving federal Pell grant funding should investigate. This program is a congressionally-funded program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, TX.
