We have received the following scholarship information from various outside agencies. Scholarships are listed by alpha-order. It is possible some scholarship opportunities may no longer be available and our officer has not yet been notified.

Local Organizational Scholarships

Alpha Iota Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa

Deadline: May 1st

Alpha lota Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa is accepting applications for their 2009 scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student from Southwest Nebraska who has completed the sophomore yearin college in the field of education. The $300 scholarship will be awarded in June. To qualify for this scholarship, the student must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
Counties to be included in this designation of SW NE are: Chase, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Hayes, Hitchcock, and Red Willow.
Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honoraray organization of women educatiors dedicated to education excellence, alturism and world understanding. Alpha Iota Chapter encompasses members from SW NE. American Legion

   Deadline: April 1st

The American Legion, Bill Dowling Post No. 12, provides this scholarship to be awarded to a freshman student selected from Chadron High School.

Recipient Must:

  • Have a parent that is a member of the Bill Dowling Post No. 12 American Legion Auxiliary
  • Graduate in the Upper 10%
  • Selection on basis of Scholarship, Character and Leadership

In order to receive the scholarship for second semester, the recipient must maintain a “C” average.

 

This scholarship is renewable with a “B” average. Students who wish to apply for or renew this scholarship must contact the Youth Activity Committee of the American Legion Post No. 12, Chadron, Nebraska, or their High School Counselor for an application.

ARC Association for Retarded Citizens -- Southwest McCook, Nebraska

   Deadline: April 30th

A $500 scholarship is offered by ARC.

Recipient Must:

  • Be a Freshman or Upperclassman
  • Majoring in Special Education
  • Be from the counties of Dundy, Chase, Hitchcock, Hayes, Frontier, Redwillow and Furnas

Hugh Bunnell

   Deadline: May 1st

The Hugh Bunnell Scholarship is offered by The Alliance Times-Herald.

Recipient Must:

  • Be a Graduate of Box Butte County High School
  • Studying News or Advertising Journalism

Applications must be accompanied by a 500-1,000 word essay on the applicant’s expectations of a career in journalism, a teacher’s recommendation and a grade transcript. The recipient will be announced by May 15.

Chadron Public Library Foundation/Pauline Moody

   Deadline: February 15th

The Chadron Public Library Foundation awards a $500 scholarship each year.

Recipient Must:

  • Be a High School Senior of Chadron or Crawford High Schools

This scholarship was established in 1987 in memory of Pauline Moody, a longtime educator and resident of Dawes County and a major contributor to the Chadron Public Library Foundation.

Applications are available from the Chadron or Crawford High School Guidance Counselors or by contacting the Chadron Public Library. All completed applications should be returned to the High School guidance counselor.

Common Cents

Recipient Must:

  • Be employed or have a parent employed by Common Cents for at least six months
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
  • Rank in the upper one-half of his/her class
  • Financial need and scholastic ability will be considered

Dawes County Extension Council

The Dawes County Extension Council gives a scholarship each year to a Chadron State College student.

Recipient Must:

  • Be pursuing a degree of education in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences or Agriculture
  • Students whom attended any of the high schools in Dawes County will be given preference
  • Show leadership
  • Maintain financial need
  • Selection is based on scholastic record

Emick-Masonic Youth

The Glenn O. and Evelyn F. Emick Memorial Scholarship provides a $1,000 scholarship.

Recipient Must:

  • Be attending either Chadron, Peru or Wayne State College
  • Show a respectable scholastic record
  • Be a Nebraska resident
  • Be active in one of the Masonic youth organizations: Demolay, Job’s Daughters or Rainbow Girls

Peg Sagen Memorial Scholarship

   Deadline: April 23rd.

A $500 Scholarship in memory of former Rapid City Journal Editor-in-Chief Peg Sagen who died in Auguest 2006.

Recipient Must:

  • Be a high school graduate from our coverage area, which includes all of western South Dakota as well as Northeastern Wyoming and Northwest Nebraska
  • Be an enrolled college student pursuing a degree in journalism.

P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund

A female student is eligible to receive consideration for a loan if she is a high school graduate (or equivalent), is a citizen of the United States or Canada, is recommended by a local chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and is either enrolled in or will enroll in any accredited college or university.

High school seniors or graduates may apply for loans, but money cannot be made available until after the student has earned full credit for one quarter, trimester or semester of work.

The Chadron Chapter of Business and Professional Women provides an annual scholarship in the amount of $500.

Wal-Mart Scholarships

The Wal-Mart Foundation has several different scholarships.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship - Two $1,000 scholarships
   Application Deadline: February 1st

Applicant must:

  • Be a graduating high school senior
  • Not be an Associate of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., or be a child/dependent of an Associate of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

All local winners will automatically be entered into a state competition for a chance to win an additional $4,000 scholarship, for a total award of $5,000. All state winners will then be automatically entered into a national competition for a chance to win an additional $20,000 scholarship, for a total scholarship award of $25,000!

Higher REACH Scholarship
   Application Deadline: February 1st

Applicant must:

  • Be a non-traditional student
  • Have been employed by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. for at least one year as of February 1st
  • Have been out of high school for at least one year

Associate Scholarship
   Application Deadline: February 1st

Applicant must:

  • Be graduating from high school
  • Employed by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. or a child of a Associate who are considered ineligible for the Walton Family Foundation Scholarship, due to parent's length of employment, or less than full-time employment status.

Walton Foundation Scholarship
   Application Deadline: February 1st

Applicant must:

  • Be a current graduating high school senior
  • Be a child or legal dependent of a Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Associate who has been employed full time (34 hours per week or more) for at least one year as of February 1.

West Nebraska Blood Center Scholarship Fund

   Application Deadline: May 31 - The award will be announced in July.

West Nebraska Blood Center, the blood donor center at Regional West Medical Center, established this scholarship fund to promote the field of laboratory medicine. The scholarship is not to exceed $4,000 per year per applicant and may be used for tuition, fees, books, and related expenses.

Applicants must:

  • Be an undergraduate student
  • Be pursuing a career in Laboratory Medicine
  • Selection will be based on academic performance, interest/experience in healthcare
  • Show financial need
  • Special consideration will be given to students who are residents of the Nebraska Panhandle and Eastern Wyoming

Adeline Neilson Scholarship Foundation

   Application Deadline: April 28

Applicants must:

  • Be a continuing student or an entering freshman
  • Be enrolled at a college, university or trade school

Accountemps/AICPA Student Scholarship

   Application Deadline: April 1

Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded.

Applicants must:

  • Be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student
  • Be enrolled at an accredited institution in the United States
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Majoring in Accounting, Finance or Information Systems
  • Have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or above
  • Have completed 30 semester hours successfully, including at least six semester hours in accounting
  • Be an AICPA Student Affiliate Member

Alpha Delta Kappa Alpha Mu Chaper Scholarship

Application Deadline: May 1, 2009

A $500 scholarship is available for student who have successfully completed their student teaching assignment during the 2007-08 school year. Applicants must be graduates of one of the following area high schools: Alma, Axtell, Holdgege, Loomis Minden and Southern Valley. A letter from the supervising professor from the college verifiying successful completion of student teaching assignment must be included with the application. Complete applications are due May 1. ARC - Elkhorn Valley Scholarship

   Deadline: April 30

Applicants must:

  • Plan on receiving a BS teaching degree majoring in the field of special education
  • Be a graduate of a Cuming County High School; such being Beemer, Bancroft Rosalie, Wisner Pilger, West Point High or West Point CC
  • Be attending a Nebraska College that offers a Special Education Teaching Endorsement

Brian Sorenson Memorial Scholarship

   Deadline: March 1

Applicants must:

  • Be a college Junior or Senior
  • Major in any of the sciences, excluding agricultural science
  • Have a “B” or higher equivalent grade point average
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Primary consideration will be for a graduate of Hershey High School
  • Have home residence of Custer, Dawson, Frontier, Hayes, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, or Perkins County of Nebraska
  • Students receiving athletic scholarships will NOT be considered

Recipient must:

  • Be a Sophomore or Junior enrolled at a four-year, accredited college or university in the state of Nebraska

  • Be anticipating a career in a science related industry, science teaching, or scientific research

Central Platte Natural Resources District

   Application Deadline: April 1, 2009

The Central Platte Natural Resources District (CPNRD) will provide 10 students with $1,000 scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year. The CPNRD will rank applicants according to those in the junior and senior grades. Students pursuing careers in the following fields are strongly encouraged to apply:

  1. Applicant must be a resident of the CPNRD.
  2. Applicant must be registered to attend an accredited post-secondary institution during the 09-10 academic year.
  3. Applicant must have submitted a financial aid form at their college by the scholarship deadline.
  4. Applicant must fully complete all requirements of scholarship application.
  5. All applications, statements and transcripts must be in the CPNRD office in Grand Island by the close of the business day on April 1, 2009. The CPNRD Board of Directors will make the final award decision at the April 23rd Board of Directors meeting.

Cody Education Association

   Deadline: April 15th

The Cody Education Association will award two $500 scholarships and one $250 scholarship.

Recipient must:

  • Be a graduate and attended of Cody, Wyoming High School for at least one year
  • Be in Junior or Senior year of college
  • Majoring in Education
  • Have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or above
  • Demonstrate financial need and have made personal efforts to meet this need

Applicants must an official transcript of their grades and a letter to the committee stating their interests and future plans in education. Recipients will be notified by May 15.

Community Hospital Health Foundation

   Deadline: September 15 (Fall) and March 15 (Spring)

Recipient must:

  1. Scholarships are intended for persons showing a desire to practice their professions at Community Hospital upon graduation. However, receiving this scholarship does not guarantee employment, nor does it obligate the recipient to return to Community Hospital.
  2. Students must have attended a minimum of 2 years of High School in one the following Nebraska counties: Keith, Lincoln, Dawson, Perkins, Chase, Hayes, Frontier, Gosper, Dundy, Hitchcock, Red Willow & Furnas.
  3. Students must have completed prerequisite courses and maintained a grade point average of at least 2.5. Students must already be accepted into an accredited healthcare education program and be a current Community Hospital scholarship recipient.
  4. All awards are paid directly to the school, not the recipient.
  5. Unlike the Scholarship/Loan Program at Community Hospital, this scholarship will not be included in forgiveness procedures and will not require repayment.
  6. Applicants must submit a typed essay of 250 words or less entitled, “Why I have Chosen the Health Field I am Pursuing”. Applicants must include cover sheet with name, address, phone number, and school attending.
  7. All selections and decisions are made at the discretion of the Education Committee.
  8. Applications and/or essays are due to the Community Hospital Foundation Office by March 15 (Spring) or September 15 (Fall) for consideration.   9. Generous benefactors make these scholarships available. Recipients will be required to submit a letter of appreciation prior to release of the scholarship.

Donald L. Erb Memorial Scholarship

   Application Deadline: March 1

Applicant must:

  • Be a college Junior or higher, including graduate students
  • Be majoring in Accounting or in Business with an emphasis in accounting
  • Be a resident of or a high school graduate from Lincoln, Keith, Deuel or Cheyenne Counties in Nebraska

Deutschman-Hill-Yanney $550 Scholarship

   Application Deadline: March 1

Applicant must:

  • Be a college Junior or higher, including graduate students
  • Be majoring in Education
  • Be a graduate of North Platte High School
  • Recipients must have completed two years as an education major, or be doing graduate work in education.

Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation

   Application Deadline: June 1st - All applications must be received by 5:00 pm in order to be considered. There will be no exceptions.

Applicants must:

  • Be a female Graduate student with disabilities
  • Enrolled in a college or university in the United States
  • Be active in local, state, or national disability organizations-either in person or electronically-that provides services and/or advocacy for people with disabilities.
  • Show academic and leadership merit

Scholarship amounts range up to a maximum of $2000 a year.

Fred Wanek Music Scholarship

   Application Deadline: March 1

Applicant must:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time music major and demonstrate deserving proficiency in musical talent
  • Permanent residence must be in counties of Customer, Dawson, Frontier, Hayes, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, or Perkins of Nebraska
  • Funds will be used to provide private music lessons, either vocal or instrumental, for which there is a charge beyond regular tuition, books, housing, food, and clothing necessary for non-musician college students

Fund for Veterans Education

   Application Deadline: October 15

The Fund for Veterans Education will provide up to a $1,000,000 in the 2008 and 2009 academic years to help meet the financial need of veterans from all branches of the United States Armed forces who served in Afghanistan or Irag since September 11, 2001 and who are now enrolled in college or vocational-technical school. Applications are being accepted until October 15, 2007. Awards will be granted for the Spring 2008 term and may be renewed for the next academic year 2008-09. Students may be enrolled part-time or full-time.

Recipients must:

Be veterans of any branch of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines), Coast Guard, National Guard and Armed Forces Reserves.

Have served and been deployed for at least 60 days in Afghanistan or Iraq after September 11, 2001, or be veterans who were deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq after September 11, 2001, but did not meet the 60-day active service period as a result of a service-related injury or condition incurred while serving in Afghanistan or Iraq.

Be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis in an Undergraduate program of study at any accredited two-year or four-year institution, public or private, including technical schools for the Spring 2008 term.

Grand Island Community Foundation Scholarships

The Grand Island Community Foundation oversees several scholarships.

Gus Swanson Memorial Communications Scholarship

   Application Deadline: March 16

The Gus Swanson Memorial Communications Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is available to qualified students.

Applicants must:

  • Have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher
  • In their Sophomore year or above
  • Be majoring in a communications related program including Advertising, Marketing, Mass Communications (print or broadcast), Communication Studies, Public Relations, Journalism or Graphic Design/Desktop Publishing
  • Be enrolled at least part-time in a Nebraska college or university

Hastings Education Association

Heartland Latino Leadership Scholarship

   Application Deadline: October 1

Independent Insurance Agents of Nebraska Foundation

   Application Deadline: March 1

The Independent Insurance Agents of Nebraska Foundation are now accepting applications for the Curtis M. Elliott Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $750.

Applicants must:

  • Show scholastic achievement, as well as participation and leadership in school and community activities, and educational goals

This is an annual scholarship/internship for second or third-year, full time college or university students for writing, photography, graphic design or convergence media.

Up to two students will be give a $1,000 scholarship and paid summer internships at Nebraska Life Magazine in Norfolk. Students need not be a journalism major to apply. National Association of Broadcasters

Purpose: The program is intended to fund research on economic, business, social, and policy issues important to station managers and other decision-makers in the U.S. commercial broadcast industry.

The Freedom Forum/NCAA Sports Journalism Scholarship

The Freedom Forum, through a grant to the NCAA, supports eight $3,000 scholarships to college Juniors who have career goals in sports journalism and major in journalism or have experience in campus sports journalism.

Nebraska Juvenile Justice Association (NJJA)

The NJJA is a private non-profit association organized in 1975 by professionals concerned with the need for ongoing training and education in the Juvenile Justice System. The purpose of NJJA is to promote quality and improvement of services to juveniles in the following manner:

Submit an essay of not more than 250 works on what their goal is for the future in relation to the orthopedically impaired and/or physically disabled, and their need for this scholarship.

For Priority 2 - Applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Nebraska
  • Be enrolled in a higher education course in the school of their choice
  • Be in pursuit of a Teaching or Health-related degree, with emphasis on the orthopedically impaired and/or physically disabled
  • Making satisfactory progress toward their degree

Peter Kiewit Foundation Legacy Scholarship Program

   Application Deadline: January 7

Offers 50 scholarships to graduating high school Seniors throughout the 93 Nebraska counties for up to four consecutive years of study at any public or private accredited college or university in Nebraska.

  • Be a graduating senior from Nebraska
  • Show financial need
  • Show academic achievement
  • Rank in the top 20% of their high school class

Pheasants Forever Scholarship

  • Be a resident of Sheridan or Johnson County in Wyoming

Offers several scholarships of $750 each.

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduate or graduating Senior from one of the 24 Nebraska high schools in the Panhandle of Nebraska or have a GED Diploma
  • Be at least 1/4 Native American
  • Live off of the Reservation in the Panhandle area
  • Submit a financial worksheet
  • Send a letter outlining the applicant's goals and describing the role the applicant's Native American culture plays in his/her life

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Wildlife Leadership Awards (College Scholarships)

   Application Deadline: March 1

Offers up to ten $2,000 scholarships to outstanding college juniors and seniors studying wildlife sciences.

Applicants must:

  • Be an Undergraduate in a recognized wildlife program
  • Have Junior or Senior standing (completed a minimum of 56 semester hours or 108 quarter hours)

Sallie Mae Fund Scholarships

Applicants must:

  • Be accepted and enrolled as a full-time, Undergraduate at a Title IV eligible, accredited, post-secondary, two- or four-year college or university, vocational or technical school in the United States or Puerto Rico, and meet program-specific eligibility requirements

$500.00 Scholarship

Students must be undergraduates and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester to be eligible.  Both graduating high school seniors and students currently attending or planning to attend college or voc-tech school during the next school year can apply.

    • Have earned a GED with an average score of 45
    • If currently enrolled in a college, university or career training school/program with a minimum 2.5 GPA
    • If a graduate enrolled in a college or university with a minimum 3.0 GPA
    • If a student enrolled in a professional school such as law or medicine, who demonstrates satisfactory progress as determined by that school
    • A prospective student whose life experiences have indicated superior talents, skills and commitment to the community and/or exceptional potential

In 2008 Tylenol will be awarding $250,000 to outstanding students who are pursuing health-related studies -- funds which will be allocated in the form of twenty $5,000 grants and 150 $1,000 grants. In the 27 years since this program began, over $6 million in scholarships have helped more then 5,000 students achieve their educational ambitions.

Wyoming Rural Electric Association Scholarship

   Application Deadline: March 1

The WREA line worker scholarship program is intended to help qualified individuals from Wyoming complete an approved regional line worker training program, learn the basics of line work and become an apprentice line worker. The scholarship is available to all qualified applicants, recent high school graduates and older "non-traditional" students, interested in a career in the electric industry.
