Chadron State College is interested in attracting international students that show strong academic ability, above average English language skills, and the capability of financing their education. Admission will be granted to those applicants who are able to provide credentials that meet the standards for admission set by the College.
- Application. International students are required to submit the special application for admission. The application deadline is June 1 of each year for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester.
- Academic Records. Students who are applying directly from their home countries, or who have not completed any course work in a U.S. high school, college, or university are advised to have a B average (3.00 grade point on a 4.00 grading scale) or better to be considered for admission.
Students transferring from U.S. colleges or universities must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00.
All academic credentials submitted must be either original records or officially signed and sealed copies of the original records. These records must be signed and sealed by an official officer of each institution you attend and sent to the CSC Admissions Office by those officials. All foreign credentials must be officially translated into English. Unofficial photocopies are not acceptable. An official transcript of course work completed in the U.S. must be submitted from each college or university attended.
- English Language Skills. Scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must be submitted by applicants at the time of the application. The minimum required TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 79/80 (Internet-based).
To register for the TOEFL or to request that your official test scores be submitted to Chadron State College go to www.toefl.org. Arrangements to take the TOEFL can also be made by writing to the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ 08540, USA or by inquiring at the nearest U.S. Consulate. All international applicants should ask to have test results sent to the Admissions Office, Chadron State College, Chadron, NE 69337 USA (code #6466). The American College Testing (ACT) assessment may be substituted for the TOEFL. Minimum score: English 18, Math 18, Social Science 18, Natural Science 18.
- Financial Statement. Certification of all adequate financial support for all international applicants is required. Admission will not be granted until proof of funds for the duration of study has been submitted.
A special CSC International Applicant Financial Statement must be completed and returned before admission is granted. Applicants must be prepared to pay tuition and fees, as well as costs for living expenses, for the duration of stay at CSC. If upon arrival, a student does not have the required funds, it will be necessary for us to notify the U.S Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services of failure to fulfill the requirements for a student visa.
Each applicant should have adequate funds available to cover costs, for each 9 month period of study in the USA. Depending on the credit hours over the 12 credit hour minimum requirement. TRAVEL EXPENSES ARE EXTRA!! Married applicants should have additional funds available for each 9 month period plus $2,100 U.S. dollars for each child per year. These costs are subject to change and are likely to rise. Applicants should have additional funds available if needed. Detailed cost estimates are provided on a yearly basis. Please note the additional information under “Settling Costs”.
- Personal recommendations. A personal recommendation from instructors, sponsors, and other persons who may be responsible for the applicant will also be considered for international applicants. The recommendation should be sent to the Admissions Office at Chadron State College.
- Insurance certification. International Students at Chadron State College are required to have adequate health and accident insurance and provide proof of such coverage to the Admissions Office. The minimum coverage is $50,000. If you already have personal coverage, simply provide us with documentation of such. If not, insurance policy information is available through the Admissions Office.
Admissions Decisions
Admission decisions are based upon academic coursework and in the case of students who are already in the U.S., compliance with visa regulations is taken into consideration. Other factors such as personal recommendations will also be considered. Admission decisions will also be based on the capability of the College to accommodate additional international students. Any foreign academic course work accepted by the College is subject to departmental approval. Evaluation of transfer credit will not be completed until the applicant has arrived on campus and enrolled in classes. Students have been accepted at CSC when they have received the I-20 or DS-2019.
Credit Load Requirement
International students are required by U.S. Immigration law to carry a full course of study. Full-time means a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours per semester for graduate students. Failure to comply will result in termination of registration.
Settling Costs
International students coming directly from their home countries should have with them no less than $800 (single student) or $1000 (married student with family) upon arrival to cover various settling costs. This may include an apartment deposit and possible motel and food costs prior to the dates the College room/food contracts or off-campus housing becomes available.
Transfer of Funds
There are often difficulties in transferring funds from foreign countries to the United States. Students should become thoroughly familiar with their government’s regulations on exchanging and forwarding money. It is important that sufficient funds are available at the beginning of each semester, as tuition and other instructional fees are due at this time.
Housing
Students who desire College housing (residence halls or CSC apartment housing) should contact the Housing Office, Chadron State College, Chadron, NE 69337. Inquiries should be made as early as possible. Often students must stay in a local motel if off-campus housing cannot be obtained immediately.
How to Get to Chadron
Depending upon the port of entry, most students fly into Denver, Colorado, after arriving in the United States. Commuter flights on a limited basis are available from Denver to Chadron via Scottsbluff, Nebraska. For information about international flights and flights from Denver to Chadron click here.
Buses also travel to Chadron from many different cities. Travel agents may be able to help new students locate transportation to Chadron.
Health Insurance
Chadron State College Requirement
Contrary to what is true in many other countries, medical care in the United States is not free, and in fact, may be quite expensive. Health insurance protects you from having to pay large medical bills that can arise even from simple medical procedures. Getting insurance for dependents that come with you also is advisable. See page nine of the International Student Application.
While enrolled at CSC, both undergraduate and graduate international students are required to acquire and maintain health and accident insurance that meets criteria set by Chadron State College. You will be required to provide written evidence (in English) of appropriate accident and health insurance upon registration and again each year (beginning of the fall semester) while enrolled at CSC. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REGISTER WITHOUT PROOF OF ADEQUATE HEALTH COVERAGE.
Insurance certification
- If you already have adequate insurance, simply provide the CSC International Student Service Counselor with documentation (copy of the policy pages showing specific coverage and effective dates in English). Once a year (prior to fall semester enrollment), for as long as you are enrolled at CSC, you are required to provide written evidence (in English) of continuing insurance coverage.
- If you do not have the required coverage, the College will enroll you in a plan that meets CSC minimum requirements. The College will charge you for the cost of the insurance. Policy details are available from the International Student Counselor.
International Students Health Insurance Policy Criteria
- The policy is valid throughout the entire academic year and must include periods of study, work, training, and vacation.
- The medical benefit is at least $50,000 U.S. dollars per illness or injury and the co-payment does not exceed 25%
- The repatriation benefit is at least $7,500 U.S. dollars
