The College

Chadron State College, located in Chadron, Nebraska, enrolls nearly 3,000 students in a variety of programs of study. International students from over 10 different countries are enrolled at CSC. Since 1911, CSC has been distinguished in its excellent program of Teacher Education. More recently, our strengths have been dispersed among both Liberal Arts and Teacher Education. Degrees are offered in Business (including business administration in management, marketing and management information systems); Teacher Education and Psychology; Fine Arts (including theatre, music and art); Health, Physical Education, and Recreation; Language and Literature; Science and Mathematics (including many areas relating to biology and computer sciences); Social Science (including criminal justice and legal studies).

Location

Chadron, Nebraska is located in the middle western region of the United States with the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Black Hills of South Dakota to the north. Chadron is a rural community with about 6,000 citizens and its location and community members make CSC an ideal place to live and study.

Nebraska experiences varying weather (cold days in the winter and hot days in the summer). The temperature sometimes drops below 0°F during the winter and rises to as high as 105°F in the summer.

The Chadron community is the educational center of western Nebraska and includes small retail businesses, ranching and farming. The pine tree covered area also provides opportunities for historical, recreational, and cultural orientation and livelihood.

Academic Calendar

The regular academic year is divided into two sixteen week semesters and extends from late August to early May. The fall semester begins in late August, and the spring semester begins in early January. Undergraduates should plan to begin their studies during the fall semester.

Each semester is a complete unit of study requiring examinations and completion of course work. Grades are recorded on each student’s permanent record at the end of each semester.

There are also four summer sessions: May, June, July, and August. The four sessions combined are equivalent to one semester of full-time work.

Admissions

Chadron State College is interested in attracting international students that show strong academic ability, above average English language skills, and the capability of financing their education. Admission will be granted to those applicants who are able to provide credentials that meet the standards for admission set by the College.

  1. Application. International students are required to submit the special application for admission. The application deadline is June 1 of each year for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester.
     
  2. Academic Records. Students who are applying directly from their home countries, or who have not completed any course work in a U.S. high school, college, or university are advised to have a B average (3.00 grade point on a 4.00 grading scale) or better to be considered for admission.

    Students transferring from U.S. colleges or universities must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00.

    All academic credentials submitted must be either original records or officially signed and sealed copies of the original records. These records must be signed and sealed by an official officer of each institution you attend and sent to the CSC Admissions Office by those officials. All foreign credentials must be officially translated into English. Unofficial photocopies are not acceptable. An official transcript of course work completed in the U.S. must be submitted from each college or university attended.
  3. English Language Skills. Scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must be submitted by applicants at the time of the application. The minimum required TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 79/80 (Internet-based).

    To register for the TOEFL or to request that your official test scores be submitted to Chadron State College go to www.toefl.org. Arrangements to take the TOEFL can also be made by writing to the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ 08540, USA or by inquiring at the nearest U.S. Consulate. All international applicants should ask to have test results sent to the Admissions Office, Chadron State College, Chadron, NE 69337 USA (code #6466). The American College Testing (ACT) assessment may be substituted for the TOEFL. Minimum score: English 18, Math 18, Social Science 18, Natural Science 18.
     
  4. Financial Statement. Certification of all adequate financial support for all international applicants is required. Admission will not be granted until proof of funds for the duration of study has been submitted.

    A special CSC International Applicant Financial Statement must be completed and returned before admission is granted. Applicants must be prepared to pay tuition and fees, as well as costs for living expenses, for the duration of stay at CSC. If upon arrival, a student does not have the required funds, it will be necessary for us to notify the U.S Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services of failure to fulfill the requirements for a student visa.

    Each applicant should have adequate funds available to cover costs, for each 9 month period of study in the USA. Depending on the credit hours over the 12 credit hour minimum requirement. TRAVEL EXPENSES ARE EXTRA!! Married applicants should have additional funds available for each 9 month period plus $2,100 U.S. dollars for each child per year. These costs are subject to change and are likely to rise. Applicants should have additional funds available if needed. Detailed cost estimates are provided on a yearly basis. Please note the additional information under “Settling Costs”.
     
  5. Personal recommendations. A personal recommendation from instructors, sponsors, and other persons who may be responsible for the applicant will also be considered for international applicants. The recommendation should be sent to the Admissions Office at Chadron State College.
     
  6. Insurance certification. International Students at Chadron State College are required to have adequate health and accident insurance and provide proof of such coverage to the Admissions Office. The minimum coverage is $50,000. If you already have personal coverage, simply provide us with documentation of such. If not, insurance policy information is available through the Admissions Office.

Admissions Decisions

Admission decisions are based upon academic coursework and in the case of students who are already in the U.S., compliance with visa regulations is taken into consideration. Other factors such as personal recommendations will also be considered. Admission decisions will also be based on the capability of the College to accommodate additional international students. Any foreign academic course work accepted by the College is subject to departmental approval. Evaluation of transfer credit will not be completed until the applicant has arrived on campus and enrolled in classes. Students have been accepted at CSC when they have received the I-20 or DS-2019.

Credit Load Requirement

International students are required by U.S. Immigration law to carry a full course of study. Full-time means a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours per semester for graduate students. Failure to comply will result in termination of registration.

U.S. Entry for F-1 and J-1 Students

International students who use the I-20 or DS-2019 issued by this College to enter the United States and fail to register within 30 days will be reported to the U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Employment

Due to employment restrictions, international students on F-1 and J-1 visas should not expect to work for compensation outside the College. Off-campus work permission is difficult to obtain and will not be considered by U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services during the first year of residence.

International students may be employed on campus provided that their employment does not displace a U.S. citizen from working and that they are in good academic standing. Such on-campus employment is limited to no more than 20 hours per week. On-campus employment for first year students is discouraged. Under no circumstances may a dependent of an F-1 student (F-2) or be employed.

Settling Costs

International students coming directly from their home countries should have with them no less than $800 (single student) or $1000 (married student with family) upon arrival to cover various settling costs. This may include an apartment deposit and possible motel and food costs prior to the dates the College room/food contracts or off-campus housing becomes available.

Transfer of Funds

There are often difficulties in transferring funds from foreign countries to the United States. Students should become thoroughly familiar with their government’s regulations on exchanging and forwarding money. It is important that sufficient funds are available at the beginning of each semester, as tuition and other instructional fees are due at this time.

Housing

Students who desire College housing (residence halls or CSC apartment housing) should contact the Housing Office, Chadron State College, Chadron, NE 69337. Inquiries should be made as early as possible. Often students must stay in a local motel if off-campus housing cannot be obtained immediately.

How to Get to Chadron 

Depending upon the port of entry, most students fly into Denver, Colorado, after arriving in the United States. Commuter flights on a limited basis are available from Denver to Chadron via Scottsbluff, Nebraska. For information about international flights and flights from Denver to Chadron click here.

Buses also travel to Chadron from many different cities. Travel agents may be able to help new students locate transportation to Chadron.

Health Insurance

Chadron State College Requirement

Contrary to what is true in many other countries, medical care in the United States is not free, and in fact, may be quite expensive.  Health insurance protects you from having to pay large medical bills that can arise even from simple medical procedures. Getting insurance for dependents that come with you also is advisable. See page nine of the International Student Application.

While enrolled at CSC, both undergraduate and graduate international students are required to acquire and maintain health and accident insurance that meets criteria set by Chadron State College. You will be required to provide written evidence (in English) of appropriate accident and health insurance upon registration and again each year (beginning of the fall semester) while enrolled at CSC. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REGISTER WITHOUT PROOF OF ADEQUATE HEALTH COVERAGE.

Insurance certification

  • If you already have adequate insurance, simply provide the CSC International Student Service Counselor with documentation (copy of the policy pages showing specific coverage and effective dates in English). Once a year (prior to fall semester enrollment), for as long as you are enrolled at CSC, you are required to provide written evidence (in English) of continuing insurance coverage.
  • If you do not have the required coverage, the College will enroll you in a plan that meets CSC minimum requirements. The College will charge you for the cost of the insurance. Policy details are available from the International Student Counselor.

International Students Health Insurance Policy Criteria

  • The policy is valid throughout the entire academic year and must include periods of study, work, training, and vacation.
  • The medical benefit is at least $50,000 U.S. dollars per illness or injury and the co-payment does not exceed 25%
  • The repatriation benefit is at least $7,500 U.S. dollars
  • The medical evacuation benefit is at least $10,000 U.S. dollars
  • The deductible does not exceed $500 U.S. dollars per illness or injury

Financial Obligations

As part of your admission, you certified that you have a minimum of 13,378 U.S. dollars available to cover 12 months of attendance at Chadron State College. Married students should have a minimum of 18,000 U.S. dollars and an additional 2,100 U.S. for each child. This amount is in addition to travel expenses. These costs are subject to change and are likely to rise. Applicants should have additional funds available if needed. Detailed cost estimates are provided on a yearly basis. Applicants must be prepared to pay tuition and fees, as well as costs for living expenses, for the duration of stay at CSC. If upon arrival, a student does not have the required funds, it will be necessary for us to notify the U.S Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services of failure to fulfill the requirements for a student visa.

Payment

Admitted international students are required to pay for their first semester of attendance at least 30 days in advance of their arrival at Chadron State College before their I-20 is issued. Payment will be based on prevailing tuition, fees, room, and meals for full time status for one semester. Any additional costs not covered by the prepayment (including settling costs) are due at the time of enrollment. A prompt refund will be mailed to students who do not attend as planned. The following students are not required to make payment 30 days in advance of their arrival at CSC; however, unless other arrangements have been made in advance, full payment is due at the time of enrollment.

  1. Students attending Chadron State College under an affiliation agreement with a sponsoring institution or agency.
  2. Students whose cost of attendance is being paid under a third party agreement.
  3. Graduate students who have been awarded CSC graduate assistantships.

International Student Assistance

The entire Chadron State College campus works together to assist international students and many individuals are available to help new international students become acquainted with the campus and the community. Some special items to note are below.

International students are assigned academic advisors according to their major once they arrive at Chadron State. Once students arrive on campus they should come to the Admissions Office in Crites Hall and they will be assigned someone to help them with their class schedules and other issues relating to settling in to college life at CSC.

The Admissions Office processes undergraduate applications for admission, assists in interpreting immigration regulations, and various record keeping functions. The Registrar is the college person who is assigned the responsibility of signing all immigration forms. The Admissions Office staff and the Registrar are not responsible for advising and counseling of international students. However, staff members in these offices are available to refer international students to appropriate individuals who can help them.

The International Club is open to all students on the CSC campus and especially welcomes the new international students to campus by hosting several events, trips and weekly meetings. For more information about the International Club please contact the sponsor Ms. Frances Gonzalez.

General Responsibilities of International Students

Students are responsible for knowing the regulations of their visa status as defined by the U.S. immigration laws. For information about immigration requirements you can visit the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services website at http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis.

Students are responsible for knowing their government’s requirements for foreign currency exchange permission and for requesting and submitting appropriate documents which are required for the transfer of funds from their country to the United States.

Students are responsible for requesting certification of enrollment and/or grade reports from the Registrar’s Office, if necessary, for the granting of foreign exchange permission or foreign scholarships/loans.
