Dr. Kathleen Kirsch and Dr. Shafiq Rahman are currently working on a project on crisis communication and people’s media dependency. They have conducted a pilot survey on how the people of Chadron were informed of a recent crisis situation: The Oct. 11, 2007, campus lockdown following an armed robbery. They have presented their preliminary findings in the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication, Midwinter Conference, Pittsburgh, 2008.
Dr. Shafiq Rahman is currently working on a project on the constructions of identity and citizenship of the Bangladeshi-Americans, a non-Arab South Asian and a predominantly Muslim community in the United States. He had extensively studied the Bangladeshi diaspora in the U.S. in his Ph.D. dissertation. In his dissertation, he examined how Bangladeshis utilize media, both mainstream and diasporic, in their identity construction process. He made a trip to New York, his research site, last summer and conducted some follow-up interviews and fieldwork.
