The Communication Arts department helps students gain tools for life-long learning and for developing more meaningful and effective voices in the ongoing conversation of our communities and our culture.
We seek to accomplish our mission through an active program of communication study, practice, and research.
A group of Chadron State students are getting vital industry experience and having fun too by self-publishing their own book.
The project came about as a result of an academic assignment for CA 238, Intro to Mass Media, taught by CSC Associate Professor Shafiq Rahman.
Rahman wanted to give the students in his class a practical application for their academic assignments. The result of this desire was a challenge Rahman issued to his students – compile, edit, and format a collection of their essays into a self-published book.
A group of students, mostly Communication Arts majors, eagerly accepted the challenge and began the arduous task of editing their colleagues’ work.
Shortly before the end of the fall 2011 semester, the group designed a cover. Concurrently, the group branded the collection of essays with the title “My Media & Me.”
The group is currently editing the last of the essays, and hopes to have the final product finished by summer break.
Rahman, who is writing the book's foreword, said “The project engaged students at a higher level. They took control of their own learning and I hope they experienced a deeper learning as a result of their active participation in this project. I am positive it will be a highly gratifying experience for them when they see their essays published in a book.“
