2011-The 2011 season will be Todd Auer’s 22nd year on the football staff at Chadron State College, making him the longest tenured football coach at the school.
He served as the offensive line coach his first four years, but 17 years ago took over as the defensive coordinator, a position he thoroughly enjoys.
Auer also recruits the states west of Nebraska and helps coordinate the football team camps.
During much of Auer’s term as defensive coordinator, Chadron State has been a defensive power. Beginning in 1993, the Eagles led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in total defense eight of 10 years and were the scoring defense leader seven times. During a five-year span beginning in 1998, the Eagles set the pace in the conference in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, limiting opponents’ first downs and quarterback sacks.
The Eagles weren’t quite as potent defensively for a couple of years, but certainly regained their edge in 2006, when they again led the RMAC in several categories and ranked seventh nationally in rushing defense and among the top 20 in total defense and scoring defense.
The Eagles’ defense has been strong the past three seasons, as well. In 2007, the defensive unit was sixth in scoring defense, fifth in sacks, and 22nd in rushing defense.
In 2008, the Eagles led the RMAC in scoring defense and rushing defense, and they were 10th nationally in total defense. CSC was also eighth nationally in rushing defense, ninth in scoring defense and seventh in total sacks. They allowed just 262.5 yards a game, second best in the conference.
In 2009 and 2010, the dominance continued when CSC was ranked first in the RMAC in total defense and second in scoring defense both seasons.
A native of Wisconsin, Auer, 46, was an outstanding defensive lineman at Western Illinois University. He was named to the National Strength Team in 1985 and received first-team All-American honors from both Football News and Kodak as a senior in 1986. He also was a second-team Academic All-American as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Another highlight occurred the following year when he played three games at linebacker for the Green Bay Packers during the NFL strike.
In the fall of 1989, Auer helped coach the Western Illinois football team before coming to CSC. He received his master’s degree in sports management from WIU in May 1993.
Todd has two daughters, Alyssa and Brayden.
