CHADRON – For the third time in the last four years, the team of Rob Stack and Tom Simons and Simons' sons Brett and Scott won the Championship Flight of Chadron State College's Don Beebe Golf Classic this past weekend.
The winners entered the final round tied for third place with a score of 63, but rallied on Sunday to shoot a 56 for a 36-hole total of 119. They also won the tournament titles in 2010 and last year.
Second place in the Championship Flight went to former Chadron State athletes Larry and Mike Riley, Larry's son Ryan and Brent Timm with identical rounds of 61 for a 122 total. Third place went to Ron Borders, Marv Bussinger and Dennis King of Gordon and Chuck Niemeyer of Ashland, Neb., with a 124 total.
The First Flight was won by Michelle Rickenbach of Chadron, Rob James of Rapid City, Creighton Miller of North Platte and John Mathes of Pratt, Kan., with a 130 total. They won the flight on the strength of a tie-breaker over a team comprised of Pete and Jens Johnson of Chadron and their cousins, Judd and Jesse Norman of Billings, Mont.
A tie-breaker was also needed to determine the winners of the Second Flight. The top spot went to Chadron natives Lee Baumann of Clayton, Mo., and Scott Wieting of York, Neb., and their sons with a 134 total. Finishing second in the flight were CSC coaches Tim Connealy and Jay Long and their partners Rick Hickstein and Dennis Hochkin, also of Chadron.
Winning the Third Flight were Rick Koza of Chadron, his sons-in-law Dan Dorwart and Todd Moran, along with Ryan Plummer.
This was the 19th year for the tournament, which is used to raise funds to support the Chadron State athletic program.
